Ivan the Terrible, Sergei Eisenstein’s epic two-part 1945 film about the reign of Tsar Ivan IV in sixteenth-century Russia, will be screened at Orchestra Hall in advance of the CSO’s performance of Prokofiev’s score with Riccardo Muti conducting.

Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti and Program Annotator Phillip Huscher will provide an introduction and opening remarks prior to the screening.

Part 1 is 99 minutes. Part 2 is 85 minutes.

When filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein asked his friend, composer Sergei Prokofiev, to write a musical score for his epic film Ivan the Terrible, the result was a work of stunning complexity, a forceful study in power, corruption and morality, as relevant today as it was during the 1940s.
